NJIT & USC Upstate Set Program Records to Start #ASUNTF Indoor Seasons

LakePoint, Ga. - NJIT and USC Upstate Women's Indoor Track and Field squads started off the season competing in the UNCG Early Bird Duals, the Fordham Opener and the FDU Patch Invitational this past weekend. 

To open up the season, NJIT competed in the Fordham Opener at the Vince Lombardi Center. In her debut, Miku Okada recorded a first-place finish in the high jump with a height of 1.70m and pole vault clearing a height of 2.44m. Okadu's height in the high jump is an NJIT freshmen school-record. It is also an ECAC qualifying mark, which is the first time an NJIT female athlete has ever qualified for the indoor championships in any field event. Freshman Cassandra Raia finished third in the women's 3000 meter run with a time of 11:07.54. In the weight throw, Kayla Breaux set a new freshman record with a distance of 10.92, surpassing the old mark of 10.82 held by teammate Shannon Turner. Vanessa Marques personal best mark of 11.75m in the weight throw moves her into third on the NJIT all-time list. Lastly, in the shot put, Turner and Esther Daramola finished in second and third with distances of 10.69m and 10.14m. 

In the Highlanders second competition of the weekend at the FDU Patch Invitational in the 5000 meter run freshman Cassandra Raia finished second with a time of 19:45.62, while teammate Jasmin Lim placed fourth with a time of 20:45.92. Sophomore sprinter Ayanna Garrett was the top finisher for NJIT in the 55 meter dash recording a time of 7.65. A new 4x200 meter relay record for NJIT was set by Trish Roche, Kristina Boafom, Sydne Nance and Garrett finishing with a time of 1:48.62. The meet continued with the Highlanders also topping a freshman record time of 10:39.04 in the 4x800 meter relay, which consisted of Kelly DiCristina, Swider, Raia and Lim. NJIT returns to action at the Wagner Invitational in January. 

USC Upstate traveled to Winston-Salem, N.C. to compete in the UNCG Early Birds Duals Sunday. Freshman Sarah Hill claimed a pair of event wins as she won the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash. Hill's 60-meter dash time of 7.57 is the second fastest in school history. Another Spartan to make their collegiate debut, Adanma Uzor as she won the triple jump with a school-record mark of 11.83m and finished runner-up in the long jump. Sophomore Kalyn Brown finished in second place in the shot put at 12.46m and sixth place in the weight throw. The Spartans are set to compete at the ETSU Invitational in Tennessee in mid January.
