FGCU Defeats North Florida, Claims #1 Seed in #ASUNWTEN Championship

LakePoint, Ga. -  On Thursday, FGCU Women's Tennis clinched a share of the ASUN Regular Season title along with the No. 1 seed after defeating North Florida 4-3. The Eagles remain undefeated in conference play as the Ospreys drop to 5-1. Kennesaw State earned its first ASUN victory defeating the Highlanders 5-2.

FGCU took down unbeaten North Florida on Thursday, defeating the Ospreys 4-3 on the road. After falling behind 1-0 at the conclusion of doubles play, the Eagles soon stared at a 3-0 hole, before sealing  three straight victories starting with Sofia Perez as she picked up a 6-2 third set giving FGCU a 4-3 triumph. FGCU got off to a quick start when the pairing of Madison Gallego/Patricia Villar claimed the first doubles match 6-1. UNF soon picked up a win in a tight 7-5 decision. The tandem of Maja Ornberg/Julia Ascúa battled Rafaela Gomez and Luise Intert into a tiebreaker in which the pair ultimately fell 7-6. The Eagles search for their second-straight ourtight ASUN Regular Season title when they play Stetson on Saturday. 

Kennesaw State criused to its first ASUN win over NJIT on Thursday at home defeating the Highlanders 5-2. In doubles, Jessica Cantrell and Jada Tijani defeated Mayar Eltony and Alba Rosas Garcia, 6-3. The Owls clinched the point with Alexandra Mercado and Aspen Jarrett beating Amanda Helminsky Advaita Saravanan of NJIT 6-4. Jada Tijani was the first singles match to finish as she rolled to a 7-5, 6-2 win over Natasha Minc at No. 6. Alexandra Mercado  was next in line, knocking off Advaita Saravanan 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1. Jessica Cantrell bounced back after dropping the opening set to beat Rafaella Sampaio  5-7, 6-2, 6-1. The Owls clinched the victory when senior Kennedy Craig survived tiebreakers in both sets to beat Mayar Eltony  7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2). The Owls will head to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on USC Upstate at 2 PM. 

Lipscomb grabbed its third ASUN victory of the season on Thursday, dispatching the Spartans, 6-1. Kateryna Popova continued her stellar freshman campaign with a quick, 6-1, 6-2 victory over USC Upstate's Noelia Acuna. Madeleine Brooks and Denise Buberl each won their singles matches in two sets, while Viktoriya Dzyuba and Thabile Tshatedi used three sets to come out on top. In doubles, Dzyuba and Buberl picked up a 6-3 victory to move to 5-1 as a pairing. The Bisons clinched the point when Brooks and Popova defeated USC Upstate's team of Taylor Dodd and Noelia Acuna by a score of 7-6 in a tiebreaker. Lipscomb faces NJIT on Saturday and with a win the Bisons can clinch a No. 3 seed in the ASUN Championship.
