Bisons, Highlanders and Ospreys Open #ASUNWTEN Action with Wins

- Six ASUN Conference Women's Tennis teams opened league play on Saturday with Lipscomb, NJIT and North Florida walking away with league victories to sit in first place. The next conference matches take place on Thursday, March 29th.

North Florida started ASUN action on the road with a 6-1 decision at Stetson on Saturday with victories at five of the singles positions with the only blemish coming at the No. 4 slot. In doubles action, the Ospreys won at No. 2 & No. 3 with Eva Nyikos & Lucia Montano claiming a 6-3 decision and Valentina Mariotto teaming with Florencia Rossi for a 6-1 score. The match was clinched by Montano at No. 3 singles with her 6-1, 6-4 victory vs. Vicky Geurinckx. The Ospreys improved to 11-6 with the win, while Stetson dropped to 8-6.

NJIT equaled its win total from last season of eight as the Highlanders dispatched USC Upstate, 5-2, in Newark. With doubles victories at No. 1 & No. 2, NJIT quickly moved ahead of the Spartans before Advaita Saravanan, Mayar Eltony, Holly Matson and Amanda Helmisnky closed out the match with singles victories at No. 1, 2, 3, & 5. Taylor and Morgan Dodd landed points for Upstate with three-set victories at No. 4 & 6. The victory marks the fourth in the last five for NJIT and is the Highlanders' second-straight victory in an ASUN opener.

Lipscomb joined the winner's circle with its 5-2 triumph vs. Kennesaw State in the Peach State. The Bisons registered wins at the top-four singles spots behind efforts from Viktoriya Dzyuba, Kateryna Popova, Madeline Brooks and Denise Buberl. Dzyuba and Buberl both won in three sets in two tight matches, while Kennesaw State's Jessica Cantrell & Aspen Jarrett earned victories at No. 5 & 6. The Bisons locked up the doubles points with wins by Buberl & Dzyuba at the top spot, while Thabile Tshatedi and Kateryna Kandyba posted a 6-3 win at No. 3. Lipscomb improved to 7-9 with the win for its first win in an ASUN opener since the 2010-11 season.

FGCU was edged by South Florida, 4-3, on Saturday despite singles victories from Maja Ornberg (#1), Sofia Perez (#5) and Bridget Forster (#6). The Eagles (4-7) open their ASUN Regular Season title defense on Thursday against Lipscomb in Nashville, Tenn.
