LakePoint, Ga. - Home teams reigned supreme on Thursday in ASUN Conference Men's Basketball action with FGCU, Jacksonville, North Florida and Stetson all protecting their home courts.
North Florida upset the top-rated RPI team in the ASUN as the Ospreys toppled Lipscomb, 102-96, behind 14 three pointers for the Birds of Trey with a team-high five from JT Escobar. Ivan Gandia-Rosa poured in a career-high 26 points with five assists, while Noah Horchler recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and 15 boards to go along with four blocks. Playing without Wajid Aminu, North Florida outscored the Bisons 56-48 in the second half. Reigning ASUN Player of the Week, Garrison Mathews registered his second-straight double-double with 32 points and 12 boards - adding two assists and three steals. Rob Marberry contributed 20 points and nine boards in the loss.
FGCU improved to 2-0 in league play with another dominant performance in a 75-58 victory vs. USC Upstate. The Eagles held a 38-17 advantage at halftime by holding the Spartans to 6-of-31 shooting (19.4%), while Dinero Mercurius provided the offense with 11 points on three first-half triples. Zach Johnson finished with a game-high 17 points with Mercurius (13) and Ricky Doyle (11) adding double-digit scoring efforts. The Eagles sit 2-0 in the ASUN for the third-straight season.
Jacksonville joins the Eagles atop the league standings as the Dolphins grinded out a 65-58 decision against Kennesaw State in Swisher Gymnasium for the Dolphins' first 2-0 start to ASUN action since the 2012-13 season. Trailing by as much as 12 in the second half, the Dolphins chipped away at the KSU advantage led by 14 points each from JD Notae, Jace Hogan and Devin Harris. JU goes for its first 3-0 start to conference play since 2011-12 on Saturday by hosting Lipscomb.
Stetson overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to outscore NJIT by 20 points in the second half for an 80-67 victory in the Edmunds Center on Thursday night. Divine Myles secured his 23rd career 20-point game with Leo Goodman and BJ Glasford each tallying 15. Angel Rivera joined the scoring party with 10 points, while also dishing out five assists. The Hatters shot 56.1 percent from the field and held NJIT to 39.7 on a stifling defense, which only allowed eight made field goals after the break.
