LakePoint, Ga. - Two home teams (FGCU, NJIT) and two road squads (Lipscomb, Jacksonville) claimed victories on the opening day of the ASUN Conference Men's Basketball league play. Garrison Mathews stole the show as he posted the highest point total in the ASUN in six seasons.

Garrison Mathews set a program NCAA Division I record for single-game points as he finished with 43 in Lipscomb's 86-71 victory at Kennesaw State to open league play. Mathews' point total was the most in the ASUN since North Florida's Parker Smith scored 46 on Feb. 20th, 2012. The junior guard finished 12-of-20 from the floor with four triples and a 15-of-17 effort from the charity stripe. He added 13 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Eli Pepper chipped in 16 points and 12 boards in Lipscomb's win. Three Owls finished in double figures in the loss with a team-high 17 from Nick Masterson and 15-point efforts by Jordan Jones and James Scott.
NJIT collected its first conference win in the WEC with a 98-87 triumph against USC Upstate behind five players recording at least 12 points including a game-high 21 from Anthony Tarke. Mohamed Bendary stepped into a starting role with Abdul Lewis out due to injury and responded with eight points, nine assists and six rebounds. Freshman Zach Cooks (15) and Shawndale Jones (13) combined for 28, while Reilly Walsh (15) and Shyquan Gibbs (12) contributed to the offensive effort. Upstate made 12 three's in the loss with Ramel Thompkins making four to finish with 16 tied with Jure Span for the team-high.
FGCU rolled against Stetson as the Eagles held a 29-point lead at halftime and led by as many as 44 in the contest before ending with a 90-52 score for their largest conference win in program history. Zach Johnson (19) and Brandon Goodwin (18) combined for 37 points. For the game, FGCU shot 60 percent from the field with Dinero Mercurius (13) and Christian Carlyle (10) adding double-figure performances. The Eagles hit 12 three's in the game. Stetson was led in scoring by 15 from Divine Myles with Luke Doyle and Abayomi Iyiola adding 11 each.
North Florida held a 10-point advantage at the break in the River City Rumble, but Jacksonville rallied late to win their first-ever game in the series under Head Coach Tony Jasick to snap a nine-game win streak. Freshmen led Jacksonville in scoring in the 90-86 victory with 25 from JD Notae and a career-high 22 by Jalyn Hinton, which included the game-winning dunk with 30 seconds left before finishing off the score with two free throws. Jace Hogan poured in 18 points with 11 rebounds with Devin Harris chipping in 15 with six assists.
